MR. DEATH: THE RISE AND FALL OF FRED A. LEUCHTER JR. (Errol Morris, 1999)

THE WONDERFUL, HORRIBLE LIFE OF LENI RIEFENSTAHL (Ray Muller, 1993)

The wonderful: Leni Riefenstahl is a pioneer of women in film . A talented and brilliant dancer and athlete, she turneed to acting, then to directing. The horrible: Riefenstahl became the official film-maker of the Nazi party. A gifted image maekr, she made the now infamous propaganda film Triumph of the Will, an account of the Nuremberg Party Rallies of 1933. Her strongly fascist style reached its height in Olympia, her stunning documentary on the Olympics in 1936. The 91 year old Riefenstahl takes pains to insist that she never knew of the atrocities taking place and that she was never a member of the Nazi party. She continues to deny her films are anything but pure documentary. Was she a passionate filmmaker doing a job for her government? Was she a victim of circumstance and a heroine? Or a fascist propagandist? A rich and interesting portrait of a true talent and the moral ambiguity surrounding her life.

AU REVOIR, LES ENFANTS (Louis Malle, 1987)

Based loosely on Malle's own experiences, the film takes place in a boarding school harboring Jewish students. It's a bittersweet story of two french school boys, one of whom is a jew, and thier friendship during the occupation.
